how do robotic mowers work?

Robotic mowers come with a lot of perks which include no more mowing or noisy lawn care crews on your property every week! A freshly-cut lawn with no work sounds great, but how does it work?

LEARN MORE ABOUT ROBOTIC MOWERS

BETTER FOR YOU AND YOUR LAWN

Most robotic mowers will cut your grass in a random pattern and some have a back and forth pattern. It stays inside the boundary wires, avoiding any obstacles. When it’s done for the day or if the battery is getting low, the mower automatically returns to its charging station to get ready for the next mow. A robotic mower can work 24/7 so your lawn always looks perfectly cut. The robot can mow at night and even in the rain, unlike traditional mowing. You can schedule it to mow when it's convenient for you and around your life so you can enjoy your lawn more. The blades quietly and safely cut the grass without damaging property or foreign objects.

The robot cuts a little grass at a time, staying ahead of growth and fertilizing the lawn naturally with the grass clippings. The irregular mowing pattern will give your lawn a carpet-like appearance, cutting the grass from all different directions. Your lawn will be thicker and healthier too. Traditional mowing methods cut large amounts of grass every few days, which can stun the turf and cause disease especially in the growing season. Robotic mowers are completely safe too, with lift and collision sensors giving you peace of mind. If the mower encounters an object, it will stop, reverse and go in another direction. When lifted, the blades automatically and immediately shut off in less than a second.

BENEFIT FROM MOWBOT'S PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION SERVICE

Through GPS and location based technology, we'll measure and map out your property to make sure you get the correct robotic mower for your lawn size and type. Before installation, we'll walk the property with you to make sure everything is in order. We also offer a free demo so you can experience the robotic mower before purchasing and make an informed decision.

You can install a robotic mower yourself but it's not recommended. Each brand is different and one small mistake can produce a major hassle and frustration for you. With our professional and certified installation service, you can rest assured that everything will be take care of by our team. We have all necessary tools, supplies and knowledge to complete the job in a timely and professional manner. For wired versions, all wires are buried in the ground protecting them from damage and including UV rays and eliminating a tripping hazard. We work around landscaping objects, even going through sidewalks/driveways and fences when necessary. Wireless models have a reference station installed and virtual boundary established. Once installation is complete, we will walk you through everything you need to know as a robotic mower owner and provide post-installation support. Most installation jobs are completed on the same day for normal residential sized yards. Commercial properties may take longer than a day to install depending on the size and setup.

EMISSIONS FREE, BATTERY POWERED

We install a charging station at your property so the robotic mower can recharge in between mowings. When it’s time to recharge, the robot will navigate to the charging station automatically, either via signal or by following the wires (depending on the brand and type of mower). In order for the charging station to work, it will need outside electricity or a solar panel can be installed.

EVEN ROBOTS NEED GUIDES AND BOUNDARIES

Wired robotic mowers have a boundary wire that is placed around the edge of your lawn and any areas that the robot should avoid. We bury the wire in the ground with a special machine so it's protected from damage and does not pose a tripping hazard. The wire is fully customizable so the mower reaches only what it’s supposed to and leaves the rest. Guide wires help the robot navigate back to the charging station on the most efficient path even when its in a far corner of the yard. See the graphic below for details.

Occasionally, the boundary wire or guide wire may break or need repaired for wired models. We have the tools and expertise to find the problem quickly and provide repair services so your mower gets back to work right away. All repair services include a mower check, firmware update (if needed), warranty check and charging station check.

Wired Robotic Mowers

THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY

For wireless robotic mowers, a reference station is installed and is the communication point between the mower and the satellite GPS system. An exterior, virtual boundary is mapped out so the mower stays within the area you want it too. The robot automatically calculates the most efficient route to and from the charging station’s docking point. It will vary its route on the lawn to avoid unpleasant tracks as well. For most installations, one reference station can operate several wireless robotic mowers at a time that cover a large area. Wireless robotic mowers cost significantly more than wired models but they eliminate the frustration and cost associated with wire breakage.

KEEP YOUR ROBOT RUNNING

Maintaining a robot is the key for it to last. Most robotic mowers last between 8-10 years or longer fi regular maintenance is completed. Regular maintenance includes blade changing, cleaning and an overall check. Yearly service includes firmware updates, an electrical system check, warranty check and more. Winterization includes storing the the mower in a warm dry area so the robot battery is not damaged due to cold or camp conditions. Maintenance is included in our subscription service option. If you own a robotic mower, you can purchase a maintenance plan from us which include onsite service. We also offer a loaner robot in case your mower needs a repair that cannot be done onsite or we need to order a part and cause your robot to be out of service.

FAQs About Robots

WE HAVE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

The cost depends on the size of your yard and whether you want to buy a robot or subscribe to our robot service. Please see our Pricing and select "get a quote" for a customized quote. Prices start at $45/week for our subscription service. Visit our subscription page for more information. The cost of buying a robot depends on the brand and yard size. We offer financing from 6-36 months to make owning a robot more affordable for homeowners. Commercial clients, please contact us for details about financing.

For our subscription service and lease to own option, we pick up the mower and store it at our location during the winter and pause the service/lease fee so you only pay during the mowing season (April-October). If you own the mower, it will need to be stored over the off-season and winterized. You can store and winterize it yourself or purchase our storage plan and we'll do it for you. If you choose to store it yourself, we highly recommend a dry place above freezing.

Yes! Robotic Mowers are 100% safe for children and pets. There have been over a million robot mowers sold in Europe over the past 10 years, and the safety record has been remarkable. Here’s why: They have sensors that make them stop and turn around when bumping into something. If they’re picked up while mowing, the blades will stop in less than a second. They have a 3-inch barrier that prevents fingers and toes from reaching the blades while operating. It is important to remember THESE ARE NOT TOYS. Please be cautious and make sure children do not play with the mowers.

Under our subscription service and lease to own option, your robot is fully insured against theft. We install a primary GPS tracker and a secondary tracking system and are immediately notified if the robot leaves your property. The robots are automatically disabled if removed from their designated lawn and not useable. If the thief takes them to a repair shop or dealer to be reset, the robot will come up as stolen. If you buy your own robot, you can purchase GPS and theft tracking from us as well.

The average robotic mowers use 13 kWh per month, so at an average of $0.13/kWh, it would cost approximately $1.69 per month.

Dog poop won't affect the robot in small amounts. If large amounts build up on the blades and wheels, it will cause issues with cutting the grass and traction. We ask pet owners to clean up after their animals on a regular basis so this doesn't happen.

Leaves in small amounts won't affect the mower either. Large amounts of leaves (especially if wet) will shorten the life of the blades and make it difficult to cut the grass and get traction. Customers that have a lot of leaves (especially in the fall) should have their yards cleaned up on a regular basis so the robotic mower can work effectively.

Small sticks and twigs won't be a problems for the mower. Large sticks and limbs should be picked up.

No two two lawns are the same. The robot can be programmed around your lawn's needs as well as your own lifestyle and it won't interfere with your life at home. The robot will cut your grass a little each day so it will always have that "perfect cut look." It works 24/7 even at night and in the rain, if you prefer.

Fences aren't a problem. We have a proprietary robotic door that we install on your fence that allows the mower to move back and forth between both sides of the fence so you don't have to buy a second mower.

The other options is to create a different mowing zone inside the fence and carry the mower to that location so it can mow. The mower will have to be carried back to the charging station when it's finished.

It depends on the size of the yard and type of mower but robotic mowers can work day or night (24/7) and even in the rain.

Most robotic mowers don't create mowing stripes like traditional lawn mowers. However, the mower cuts a little each day, giving your lawn that perfect and even cut look 24/7 so mowing stripes may not matter to you. Some models now have the capability to mow back and forth and create a stripe-like look.
